Solo travel

Solo travel is not much different than traveling with someone. When you do your research about the areas you want to go to, nothing bad will usually happen. Or it would happen even if you go with another person. When you travel alone you may even have more opportunities to interact with other tourists and local people. But obviously, you have to do all the planning yourself.

Some advice is similar as if you travel with someone. If someone waits at the airport/station/some pub and offers you transport/accommodation out of the blue for free or for too good price, be careful. Our advice is always say no and find something official. People can be nice, but this is a big risk for your safety. This is true in all countries. If you want to risk this, at least take pictures of the car registration number, of the person, ask for their number/address, and send it to a friend.

Pages like Couchsurfing are better, they have names and pictures of people and references, it also keeps online record of where you went. But make sure the person has at least some pictures/is verified/has some references.

Before embarking on your solo trip, share your travel itinerary with a trusted friend or family member. Provide them with details of your accommodation, transportation, and any planned activities. Regularly check in with them to let them know you’re safe.

There are many ways to meet people when you travel. Again, we believe Couchsurfing is the best one as it has many people in most countries in the world and it has an app where you can meet people who are in the same area. You do not have to stay with anyone, just go sightseeing,… Unlike Tinder, the people on the website do not expect sex There are local people who want to meet tourists, but there are also other tourists. There are other similar websites. Another website to try is meetup. You can also go to hostels where you can usually meet other tourists and do something together with them. Hotels are not very good for this.

Differences:

If you are a solo traveler, it is more important to take copies of your travel documents and split your money, cards, and documents into more places. If someone steals one part of your money you will still have some. You can buy something to keep one part on your body and not in the backpack. Nothing usually happens, but you should be prepared.

Another difference is price of hotels. Rooms are usually for at least two people so you will usually pay the same price as if you travel with someone. Hostels do not work like this.

The main thing you should not do alone is hiking. It is not recommended to go hiking alone. Imagine breaking your leg somewhere 10km far from the nearest village and without any mobile phone signal. In some places, you could be stranded there for days before anyone finds you or starts looking for you. If there is someone with you they can get help and tell someone where you are. This is different if you only go a few kilometers in a populated or very touristy area. But you can try to find someone to go hiking with on sites like couchsurfing.com, meetup.com, hiking websites, or you can try to find some local site. You can also go to some village near where you want to go hiking, perhaps you will find other people who are alone and want to go hiking. Always meet the people before going hiking with them as if you hate each other it will not be a good experience.

This also applies to most other adventurous activities like diving, skying,…, but if you are experienced you will know this and if you are a beginner you will need to hire an instructor who will tell you.

A few countries are not ideal for solo women travelers. They are the more challenging travel destinations in general and are only recommended for experienced travelers so you will be able to do the research and stay safe.

Solo travel is similar to traveling with someone, but it requires independent planning. Researching your destination beforehand can help ensure a safe trip. Be cautious of strangers offering transportation or accommodation deals, as they may pose a risk to your safety. Websites like Couchsurfing provide opportunities to meet people with verified profiles and references. As a solo traveler, it’s important to keep copies of your travel documents and distribute your money, cards, and documents in different locations for added security. Sharing your travel itinerary with a trusted person and regularly checking in with them is recommended. Hiking alone is not advisable due to potential risks, but you can find hiking companions through websites like Couchsurfing, Meetup, or local hiking groups. To meet people while traveling, Couchsurfing and Meetup are suggested platforms, and hostels are also good places to socialize with other travelers.

Digital nomads

We provide some info in each article, but it is aimed at internet connection and if the destination is popular with digital nomads.

You need to find laws and rules for remote working in the country where you want to travel, they change often and we currently do not have the capacity to find the info for each article.

Many digital nomads travel as tourists and work remotely. This is usually not allowed, but some countries tolerate this. Please find experiences of other digital nomads and official info before you decide to do this as it can get you in trouble in some countries.

Some countries have digital nomad visa or something similar. You usually need to prove your income. There are dedicated websites for this, but verify the info as it changes frequently.
